What We Don't Say
  • "Pure white bison" — modern testing won't support that claim.
  • "100% bison genetics" or "verified pure" — every North American bison carries some cattle DNA at whole-genome level (2022 Derr study).
  • "No cattle DNA" — we won't claim it. All North American bison carry some introgression at trace levels.
  • "Sacred white buffalo" as a sales claim — cultural significance is referenced respectfully, never used to imply ceremonial authenticity.
  • Public pricing — the program is inquiry-only.
The Science

What SILV Actually Means.

SILV (also called PMEL17) is a melanin-related gene present in cattle. Modern genetic studies of North American bison — including the 2022 Derr Lab whole-genome work — show that essentially every bison herd on the continent carries some cattle DNA at trace levels, a legacy of late-1800s near-extinction recovery efforts and historical bison-cattle crossbreeding.

The white coat phenotype that appears occasionally in bison is most plausibly explained by SILV dilution introgressed from those ancestral cattle inputs, expressed when both copies of the gene align.

We could pretend our white bison are something more than they are. We don't. What we have is a documented, rare phenotype in a closed, disease-tested, photo-tracked herd.

The Three Genetic Origins.

White coat color in North American bison comes from three different genetic causes. Most people lump them together. We don't — because the rarity story is honest only when you know which one you're talking about.

Most Common
SILV (PMEL17) Cattle-Gene Dilution
Cream, blonde, or white coat with normal eye color. Comes from ancestral cattle introgression present at trace levels in nearly every North American bison herd. The 2022 Derr Lab work points to this as the most likely explanation for the majority of white-coat bison alive today. This is the category Snowflake almost certainly belongs to.
Very Rare
Albinism
A true absence of melanin. White coat with pink or red eyes, pink skin. Recessive, genuinely rare, and easy to distinguish on inspection. A different gene path entirely from cattle-dilution — usually associated with reduced vision and lower hardiness.
Extremely Rare · Disputed
Leucism / "True White"
Partial pigment loss with normal eye color and no apparent cattle-dilution signature. Historically the "sacred white buffalo" framing in some traditions. Genetic origin is still debated in the literature — modern whole-genome work has shown many cases historically labeled this way still trace back to cattle introgression.

We don't claim Snowflake belongs to the rarer two categories. We claim what the science supports. A documented, rare blonde-to-white phenotype within a closed, disease-tested, photo-tracked herd — the most common of the three origins, run with integrity.

Snowflake leaving the working chute — hand-worked, documented, and back to pasture. For all the calm here, he runs mischievous: quick to square up, and never shy about picking a fight with Tonka, who outweighs him by more than 400 pounds. He moves through the pasture easy and certain, like he owns it.

Market Validation
Thor.
The bull who built the program.

Thor was our original white bull — the genetic foundation of the rare-phenotype program at S&S Acres. He came to us from Dr. King's ranch in North Carolina and sired the white females now in the herd.

The king who was never dethroned. Everything around him stood smaller and weaker, and every one of them knew it — the giant in the background who never had to lift his head to prove it.

Thor anchored the program before passing it forward to Snowflake. He was sold privately in 2025.

We have mtDNA verification work in progress with the Derr Lab to characterize the maternal lineage of the rare-phenotype line. Results section will be added to this page when they arrive (expected Q4 2026 / Q1 2027).
